Althea Johnson Agency in Hicksville, NY, which serves families of the Long Island/Nassau County area, has announced the commencement of a master charity program created to help their local community. Working closely with nonprofit organizations and community leaders, the agency pledges to select a new beneficiary every 60 days. Their goal is to form fundraising campaigns which will aid worthwhile local groups, families or individuals with increased exposure and other support.
To debut their new community enrichment program, Althea Johnson, the agency’s owner, has chosen to introduce Island Harvest, the largest hunger relief organization on Long Island. Dedicated volunteers and staff deliver millions of pounds of surplus food to a network of 570 food pantries, soup kitchens and other nonprofit organizations. Their Weekend Backpack Feeding Program provides over 35,000 packs of nutritious food to school kids who might otherwise go hungry over the weekend when school meals are unavailable. Programs of hunger awareness and education help to develop and strengthen key allies in the community, enabling them to grow and feed more people. Since their inception in 2002, Island Harvest has delivered 71 million pounds of food, amounting to almost 66 million meals.
